Camelback is in the middle of Phoenix and it it a
magnet for health and outdoor enthusiast of all sizes. I first climbed
Camelback in the early 1990s and have taken friends and family up
the mountain since. My favorite time is in the evening when the sun goes
down and the city lights come up. The sliver between day and night.
On this evening, it was cool. There had been some storms running through
the mesa, but most had run their course. This view is of course, away
from the city and toward the East. Several people were waiting
for the sun to dip below the horizon in its eternal daily dance. Just
about ten minutes before the finale, the large cloud began
to move across the landscape from left to right. Moments passed. The
shadow of the mountain began to move up and away quickly.
The cloud reached its moment of balance and harmony with the mountain
shadow. Perfect for the composition that we all saw from the mountain
top and which also
took its leave as fast as it made its entry.
I captured the image here at that moment. On the trip down the mountain
in the cold dark, I was hopeful and warm.
